Scammers of Cryptocurrency targeting schools, hospitals, government offices with bomb threats

Nowadays an uncertain warning email scam appears to be targeting schools, hospitals, businesses and government buildings across the US in an attempt to extort USD $20,000 in bitcoin (BTC) with a bomb threat to avoid detonation.

On this an representative of FBI stated, “We are aware of the recent bomb threats made in cities around the country, and we remain in touch with our law enforcement partners to provide assistance. As always, we encourage the public to remain vigilant and to promptly report suspicious activities which could represent a threat to public safety.”

It seems the threats are being served with email as a cryptocurrency extortion scam. An user took a screenshot of suspicious email and sheared with us via Twitter they believe to be related to the ongoing investigations:

Not only that but also local news sources across the US are receiving seeing similar reparts regarding to this email scam.

It appears as though the demands by the scammers are just a hoax. We (HiiTech) tried to get connect to the cryptocurrency wallet address in the above email to any transactions but we weren’t able to, and law enforcement agents searching buildings where threats have been reported have so far not found any explosives. However, it’s still very important to take any bomb threat seriously and to report suspicious activity or emails immediately to the authorities, as the FBI warns.

News reports from NBC news are on to investigation of bomb threats in California, Virginia, Illinois, Ohio, and Maryland.

In cunnected news, an anonymous person known in a bomb threat to Columbine High School earlier today in Colorado. The Authorities are yet not sure if this threat was cunnected to common extortion scams, but the threat was later declared unreal.

Also from a quick Google search for “bomb threat” showing an on-increasing reports} of cities spanning the nation reporting more of the same.

At this moment, we again urge if anyone receiving a threat to consider it can be believable until a law enforcement agent specifically gives them directions otherwise. It’s worth keeping in mind that lots of investigations across the nation remain ongoing. It doesn’t matter how many are false threats if one of them isn’t. Stay vigilant and be safe.
